Polycentric Museum of Aigai
The Polycentric Museum of Aigai: a new, ‘holistic’ and dynamic approach to the relationship between archaeological site - museum - visitor
Given that the dialectic between the conservative-“traditional” and the radical-“modern” constitutes the quintessence of the Macedonian contribution to culture, it seems reasonable that this should be the basic ideological-aesthetic principle that will govern every effort to organize-reorganize-promote Aigai, the forgotten royal seat that the archaeological hoe is gradually recalling from oblivion.
With this assumption, taking into account the needs of protection and the particularities of the monuments, as well as the residential model of the ancient city itself, which was an 'open' urban formation with small and larger settlements, scattered around a central core, the city, we proceeded to a new, 'holistic' and dynamic approach to the issue of the relationship between archaeological site - museum - visitor with the creation of the multifaceted, versatile, flexible and constantly evolving Polycentric Museum of Aigai, which, with units scattered in the real-geographic space, will embrace and integrate the entire archaeological site and will expand with the help of technology into the transcendent world of virtual reality and the internet.
At this stage, the following units have been established that make up the visitable Polycentric Museum of Aigai:
1. The new museum building.
2. The protective shell of the burial complex of Philip II with the exhibition of treasures.
3. The archaeological park of the necropolis with the royal burial complex of the Temenids.
4. The palace and the theater.
5. The recorded church of Agios Demetrios located at the eastern end of the archaeological site.
To this set can be successively added any monuments, clusters of monuments or parts of the archaeological site that are preserved, organized and can receive visitors.
